Code of Conduct |

TEAM MANAGERS & CLUB OFFICIALS In the Football Association's survey of 37,000 grassroots participants, behaviour was the biggest concern in the game. This included the abuse of match officials and the unacceptable behaviour of over- competitive parents, spectators and coaches on the sideline. I will: " Attend appropriate coaching and training courses. " Not promote a 'win at all costs' approach. " Lead by example by following the laws and spirit of the game. " Ensure all coaches, players and parents are aware of the Clubs codes of conduct. " Ensure players are properly equipped before training and matches. " Deal with any breaches of rules in a professional and calm manner. " Ensure safe equipment is available for training and match days. " Be respectful to match officials, opponent's officials, players and parents. " Promote fair play and high standards of behaviour at all times. " Ensure match details are sent/received in the appropriate time frame. " Never engage in, or tolerate, offensive, insulting or abusive language or behaviour. When working with players, I will: " Place the well-being, safety and enjoyment of each player above everything, including winning. " Explain exactly what I expect of players and what they can expect from me " Ensure all parents/carers of all players under the age of 18 understand these expectations " Never engage in or tolerate any form of bullying " Develop mutual trust and respect with every player to build their self-esteem " Encourage each player to accept responsibility for their own behaviour and performance " Ensure all activities I organise are appropriate for the players' ability level, age and maturity " Co-operate fully with others in football (e.g. officials, doctors, physiotherapists, welfare officers) for each player's best interests I understand that if I do not follow the Code, any/all of the following actions may be taken by my Club, County Football Association or the Football Association: I may be: " Required to meet with the Club, league or County Welfare Officer " Required to meet with the management committee " Monitored by another Club coach " Required to attend an FA education course " Suspended by the Club from attending matches " Suspended or fined by the County FA " Required to leave or be sacked by the management committee Code of Conduct COACHES Coaches are key to the establishment of ethics in football. Their concept of ethics and their attitude directly affects the behaviour of the players under their supervision. Coaches are, therefore, expected to pay particular care to the moral aspect of their conduct. Coaches have to be aware that almost all of their everyday decisions and choices of actions, as well as strategic targets, have ethical implications. It is natural that winning constitutes a basic concern for coaches. This code is not intended to conflict with that. However, the code calls for coaches to disassociate themselves from a "win at all costs" attitude. Increased responsibility is requested from coaches involved in coaching young people. The health, safety, welfare and moral education of young people are a first priority, before the achievement or reputation of the Club, coach or parent. Set out below is The FA Coaches Association Code of Conduct (which reflects the standards expressed by the National Foundation and the National Association of Sports Coaches) which forms the benchmark for all involved in coaching. I will: " Respect the rights, dignity and worth of each and every person and treat each equally within the context of the sport. " Place the wellbeing and safety of each player above all other considerations, including the development of performance. " Adhere to all guidelines laid down by governing bodies. " Develop an appropriate working relationship with each player based on mutual trust and respect. " Not exert undue influence to obtain personal benefit or reward. COACHES I will: " Encourage and guide players to accept responsibility for their own behaviour and performance. " Ensure that the activities they direct or advocate are appropriate, for the age, maturity, experience and ability of players. " At the outset, clarify with the players (and where appropriate, parents) exactly what is expected of them and also what they are entitled to expect from their coach. " Co-operate fully with other specialists (e.g. other coaches, officials, sports scientists, doctors and physiotherapists) in the best interest of the player. " Always promote the positive aspects of the sport (e.g. fair play) and never condone violations of the Laws of the Game, behaviour contrary to the spirit of the Laws of the Game or relevant rules and regulations or the use of banned substances or techniques. " Consistently display high standards of behaviour and appearance. " Not use or tolerate inappropriate language. I understand that if I do not follow the Code, any/all of the following actions may be taken by my Club, County Football Association or the Football Association: I may be: " Required to meet with the Club, league or County Welfare Officer " Required to meet with the management committee " Monitored by another Club coach " Required to attend an FA education course " Suspended by the Club from attending matches " Suspended or fined by the County FA " Required to leave or be sacked by the management committee YOUNG PLAYERS When playing football, I will: " Enjoy playing to the best of my ability. " Learn and play by the laws of the game as directed by the referee. " Respect my team mates, my coach/team manager and match officials and their decisions. " Not use foul or intimidating language. " Respect opposition players and supporters. " Appreciate good play from the opposition as well as my own team. " Remember "There is no 'I' in 'team' ". " Always try to do my best. " Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. " Remember that winning is not all-important. " Always look for the positive, even in challenging situations. " Shake hands with the other team and the referee at the end of the game. I understand that if I do not follow the Code, any/all of the following actions may be taken by my Club, County Football Association or the Football Association: I may: " Be required to apologise to my team-mates, the other team, referee or team manager " Receive a formal warning from the coach or the management committee " Be dropped or substituted " Be suspended from training " Be required to leave the Club In addition: " My Club, County FA or The Football Association may make my parent or carer aware of any infringements of the Code of Conduct. " The FA/County FA could impose a fine and suspension against my Club. " The Club will ask me, my parent or carer to repay that fine to my Club. " Encourage my child and promote the positive even when my child may be having an off day. " Support the entire team, not only my child. " Attend at least 25% of fixtures throughout the season. My child needs my support. Code of Conduct " Not drink alcohol or smoke near or around young players near the field of play during training, or at matches. " Avoid criticising a player for making a mistake - mistakes are a part of learning.
